[W]hen extended to symbolize not only the one historic moment of Christ's crucifixion on Calvary, but the mystery through time and space of God's presence and participation in the agony of all living things, the sign of the cross would then have to be looked on as the sign of an eternal affirmation of all that is, ever was, or ever shall be.
