JCF High Desert Mythological RoundTable® Group   Print | Email

When we think of typical places, where people gather to discuss mythology, a lecture hall in Berkeley may come into mind, or a nice little cafe in New York. However, our JCF Mythological RoundTable® (MRT) Groups are spread all over the world, and one of our most committed groups is located in the midst of the Mohave desert.

The group meets at Joshua Tree Retreat Center, and is conducted by Catherine Svehla, a mythologist and storyteller with a PhD from Pacifica Graduate Institute. The JCF High Desert Mythological RoundTable® Group at Joshua Tree is part of a rich cultural landscape with several hundred working artists and musicians who are "constantly engaged in an imaginative reshaping of self and environment that is unique to the Mojave Desert" as Catherine puts it.

On June 29 the High Desert MRT gathered to discuss "The Crescent Moon Bear", a Japanese folk tale. For more information about Catherine Svehla and her group please check out her blog at http://www.catherinesvehla.com/

Catherine is a prolific writer and recipient of the New Mythos Research Grant (awarded by OPUS Archives and Research Center on the Campuses of Pacifica Graduate Institute). In July she is at OPUS to continue the work on her paper called "Blisters to Bliss."

Everything's connected in the mythic world of the JCF community, no matter where your location is!

One thing that comes out in myths is that at the bottom of the abyss comes the voice of salvation. The black moment is the moment when the real message of transformation is going to come. At the darkest moment comes the light.
