Changing from the inside out
By Mary Garrett (Ft. Bragg, NC) Joseph Campbell's work has been a huge influence in my life. It was "The Hero with a Thousand Faces" that really started it all for me. At the time I read this book, I weighed over 212 pounds and new I was nearing a fork in the road (no pun intended). I realized that there were many things in my life calling me to turn my health around and I could no longer ignore it. It took me two years but I eventually lost 100 pounds and went from a size 24 to a size 4. The really important thing was that I was changing from the inside out. Just losing the weight wasn't quite good enough though because I knew that my next responsibility was to bring the boon to the people, as he says. I volunteered my time and started a free support group at my local YMCA for lifestyle management and helped the group members lose over 300 pounds collectively within a two year period. I have continued on my path by returning to college at the age of 37, and a wife and mother of two, for a degree in Health Promotion. I have read nearly all of Joseph's books, and reread many, and am always inspired. I remember many "Campbellisms" when times are tough, whether its personal issues or those that we face us as a nation, that not only am I following my bliss, but I am "participating joyfully in the sorrows of the world." With this state of mind, I can make a difference. Thanks to you all at the Joseph Campbell Foundation for keeping his legacy going! << Back |
