Continuing on with theme of personal myth -- "finding it, learning what it is, and riding on it..." we are asking members to purchase their own copy of Pathways to Bliss by Joseph Campbell and read one chapter per meeting (unless we have a speaker). Previous attendance is not required. This month, Chapter 4: "Myth and the Self" will be discussed in the first 60 min. (see link below). This chapter includes "Jung and the Polarities of Personality" and "The Archetypes of the Collective Unconscious."
After that, we'll listen to the first half of the next section of the audio program "The Wisdom of Mythic Stories" by Dr. Jonathan Young entitled "Unconscious Dynamics in the Mythic Imagination" (30 minutes).
Over the course of the rest of the year we will revisit this program every couple of months and proceed through the next sections. - Each section may be enjoyed independent of the others.
While listening to the program you may wish to take notes to use in your own personal myth journal, so PLEASE BRING PEN AND PAPER. Otherwise, there is nothing to buy or bring for this program, we have already purchased it and have permission to use it as a group.
Here's more on the program: "The class is presented at the introductory level. The lectures review the familiar tale of The Wizard of Oz for significant metaphors and psychological insights... This course shows how to explore a classic tale for greater understanding of the inner life. We focus on how mythic stories reflect psychological dynamics... It is open to all those interested in archetypal perspectives. The lectures require no background in mythology, narrative theory, or Jungian psychology."
