Lynne Kaufman

Playwright Lynne Kaufman, who credits her friend and mentor, Joseph Campbell, as a major source of inspiration and support, has won numerous awards for her plays, including The NEA/Kennedy Center Fund for New American Plays and a Theatreworks Award for Best New Play in California.

Acid Test: The Many Incarnations of Ram Dass has received staged readings at The William Inge Theatre Festival, where Lynne was playwright in residence, and at The Magic Theatre and at 142 Throckmorton Theatre. Her website is www.Lynnekaufman.com

Lynne penned the following note about this play:

In 1971 the three best selling books in America were The Bible, Baby and Child Care by Benjamin Spock  and  Be Here Now by Ram Dass.

I’ve long been drawn to the lives and times of  historical characters and have written plays about Carl Jung, Sigmund Freud, James Joyce, Georgia O’Keeffe, Simone de Beauvoir and John Paul Sartre among others. I’ve dramatized  certain events in their lives and used them as  vessels in which to pour my own thoughts and feelings.

So it was with Ram Dass. Three significant events in his life mirrored events in my own.

Ram Dass meeting  his guru, Neem Karoli Baba in India. My meeting  my great spiritual teacher Joseph Campbell at Esalen Institute.

Ram Dass being with his father at his death. My being with my mother when she died.

Ram Dass’s  acceptance and resilience as he dealt with his catastrophic stroke.

My brother’s fierce grace as he dealt with his paralyzing automobile accident.

Through Ram Dass’s  life, I’ve  explored the laughter and tears of my own journey.  I hope that ACID TEST and its gifted actor will resonate with yours.
