MythNow Blog - Stephen Hawking: The Myths and the Critics Print | Email
This month's MythNow Blog entry is an essay contributed by Dr. Karl E. H. Seigfried, who joined as a JCF Associate after visiting our Joseph Campbell Facebook Page. Dr. Seigfried is a faculty member at both Carthage College and Loyola University Chicago’s Continuum whose most recent lecture on myth was "Wagner & Wotan: The Ring Cycle & Norse Mythology," presented to the Wagner Society of America. In Summer 2010, Dr. Seigfried spent three weeks in Iceland researching the origins of Norse mythology.
In this month's MythNow Blog, Dr. Seigried examines physicist Stephen Hawking's most recent work in light of Norse mythology: "While [Robert] Barron calls Hawking a dogmatic New Atheist, I would argue that the physicist is actually an open-minded Old Mythologist. Switch the mystic power from capital-G 'God' to little-g 'god,' move the frame of reference from Christian mythology to Norse mythology, and Hawking appears downright spiritual."

Three New Joseph Campbell Video ClipsPrint | Email
We've added three new clips in the JCF Associate Video Preview section. Joseph Campbell discusses sacrificial rituals, animals associated with lunar and solar principles, and the mythological depiction of time within eternity. You won't find these anywhere else.
The videos in this section are brief excerpts from interviews filmed with Joseph Campbell in his late seventies, previously unreleased by the Joseph Campbell Foundation. We will preview new clips for Associates every few weeks, so be sure to check back periodically for new topics—you'll always find them here first.
JCF thanks Jack Adams and Human Rights TV for volunteering their time, equipment, and expertise to edit these clips.
JCF Working Associate Stephen Gerringer will discuss Recovering the Goddess with Karen Tate on her program, Voices of the Sacred Feminine, Wednesday, August 11, at 7 pm PST. Stephen will detail male contributions to rediscovering the Goddess, Joseph Campbell's evolution of mythological thinking, and the emergence of patriarchal culture.
Listen live, or catch the interview later in the archives at the link above.
Mythological RoundTable® Program: Returning to the TablePrint | Email | More >>
During the last two weeks we received more than 20 requests from JCF associates who would like to start their own Mythological RoundTable® (MRT) group. In spite of the great interest in our MRT program, the total number of active groups (about 50) seems to remain more or less the same. Why might that be?
