More Joseph Campbell Video Clips

We've added three new clips in the JCF Associate Video Preview section. In these excerpts Joseph Campbell discusses sacrificial rituals, animals associated with lunar and solar principles, and the mythological depiction of time within eternity. You won't find these clips anywhere else. (Scroll to the bottom of the video preview page and click on "Next" to access previous clips).

The videos in this section are brief excerpts from interviews filmed with Joseph Campbell in his late seventies, previously unreleased by the Joseph Campbell Foundation. We will preview new clips for Associates every few weeks, so be sure to check back periodically for new topics—you'll always find them here first.

We will continue uploading some of the clips on these pages to YouTube in the future - a response to the hunger for "free" Joseph Campbell video that prompts so many who mean well to share commercial releases (this places JCF at risk, as we  are legally obligated to remove hundreds of clips each month from peer-sharing sites to avoid costly litigation from licensed distributors).

Though JCF earns nothing for preparing these materials, please don't upload them yourself to any of the video services. This helps protect the Foundation's copyright over this rare material.

JCF thanks Jack Adams and Human Rights TV for volunteering their time, equipment, and expertise to edit these clips.

Joseph Campbell in Popular Culture

Commerce as Mythos: Apple, Inc. & the Gospel According to Steve

® Apple, Inc.

Joseph Campbell defined mythology as other peoples' religion, and as such, not solely the province of gods and monster-slayers. Secular societies develop their own mythological systems, embodied in works of art, in works of law and of history, and in all other manner of cultural expression. Nations have their own founding myths. And corporations have learned that there is mythos in marketing as well.

No company has learned that lesson so well or implemented it with such vision as Apple, Inc. The Cupertino, California company employed, from very early on, not marketing consultants but evangelists, to spread the word among the faithful.

In last month's issue of Atlantic, Alexis Madrigal contributed The Varieties of Religious Experience: How Apple Stays Divine, an exploration of the company's recent handling of problems with the iPhone, and of Apple's technological vision as a mythos.

 The Alchemy of Sustainability

MRT of Rochester, NY

" [H]onoring the needs and requirements of all elements of our environment, and how we shape our surroundings and are shaped by them, is key to multiple mythologies on all continents and in all times."

PlanetShifter Magazine currently features an interview with JCF Working Associate Stephen Gerringer. Questions range from the personal ("What bands or authors stir your imagination?") to whether shamans still exist, what role artists play today,  and what myths might support a sustainable culture.

The online presentation at first glance might appear visually confusing: the left hand column contains background on Joseph Campbell drawn from this site; the right hand column is Stephen's interview by Willi Paul.

The JCF Events Calendar is more than a listing of Mythological RoundTable® meetings (though there is an option to view just RoundTable® events); this page also offers a window on happenings within the larger myth-oriented community, and allows JCF Associates the opportunity to share their events with other Associates, as well as with the thousands who visit the JCF website each month.

Listings the next few months include several West Coast appearances by storyteller Michael Meade, a celebration of archaeologist Marija Gimbutas sponsored by the Jung Society of Washington, D.C., the annual Bioneers conference on the environment, a weekend series of lectures on Goethe, Jung, and the midlife crisis in Zurich, Swizerland, and November's Gaia Festival in Santa Barbara (which includes presentations by JCF Working Associate Stephen Gerringer - "From Hades to Heaven: A Labyrinthine Legend of Love & Loss" - and  JCF Mythological RoundTable® leader Catherine Svelha, Ph.D. - “Birthing, Breathing, Thinking, Weaving: Gaia and Grandmother Spider”). There's even a lecture cruise departing Rome, Italy, on May 16, 2011, offering a Science of Mind course titled "Joseph Campbell: Myth & Spirit."

JCF welcomes these announcements from our Associates of lectures, performances, conferences, and other myth-oriented activities with broad appeal.

To post an announcement, visit the JCF Events Calendar page and click the "Submit Event" link (make sure you're logged in, or you won't find the link). Fill out the fields on the form: category (workshop/program/event); name of event; the url of a relevant image you'd like displayed (speaker, location, logo, etc. - something to which you have the rights or an image in the public domain); duration (e.g., 2 hours, 2 days, etc.); date and start time; venue; a website link for more info; and address.

Then use as much text as needed to describe the event - use boldface, italics, or different colors, highlight links, even add further images (how to do this should be self-explanatory - just move your cursor over any symbol you don't recognize in the toolbar area), or cut-and-paste from your online site. Below the text area enter the amount if there is a fee, a contact email address for more info, and end by clicking on the "Submit Event" button at the bottom of the page.

Given the demands on our multi-tasking staff, it may take 24 hours or so before your announcement appears on the calendar (postings will be reviewed to screen inappropriate entries, but this hasn't been a problem so far - only JCF Associates are able to submit entries).

The Joseph Campbell Foundation provides this calendar of events as a public service - ideally, as a tool for expanding the scope and reach of the myth-minded community. Of course, JCF Associates are always advised to seek out more information. An appearance on this page should never be taken as an unqualified endorsement by the Foundation (except for clearly marked JCF-sponsored events).

FALL PREMIUM

Pathways to Bliss

In these pages, The Collected Works of Joseph Campbell presents twelve eclectic, far-ranging and brilliant essays exploring myth in all its dimensions: its history; its influence on art, literature, and culture; and its role in everyday life.

This second volume of Campbell’s essays (following Flight of the Wild Gander) brings together uncollected writings from 1959 to 1987. Written at the height of Campbell’s career — and showcasing the lively intelligence that made him the twentieth century’s premier writer on mythology — these essays investigate the profound links among myth, the individual, and societies ancient and contemporary. Covering diverse terrain ranging from psychology to the occult, from Thomas Mann to the Grateful Dead, from Goddess spirituality to Freud and Jung, these playful and erudite writings reveal the threads of myth woven deeply into the fabric of our culture and our lives.

Nearly three-quarters of the way through the year, and we are still here - a testament to the tenacity of our Associates. This site would not exist without you.

We haven't words adequate to express the depth of our appreciation to those of you have been touched by Joseph Campbell's words, who have felt the fulfillment that comes of following your bliss no matter how steep the path, and who have been moved to share the boons thus gained. The Joseph Campbell Foundation is the only organization responsible for preserving Joseph Campbell's work and ensuring it remains available to the public. We thank you for supporting JCF's mission, thus enabling others to benefit from Campbell's vision and engage their own mythic imagination.

You can help keep his work available by taking a moment to visit our Contributions area.

You can also help by patronizing the online JCF Bookstore. Purchases made through the bookstore generate a small contribution that helps keep JCF programs running. We even earn a small fee for items outside our own offerings when added to your Amazon cart, as long as you begin your shopping in our bookstore (this includes items that are not books: our thanks to whoever ordered the "50 years of Mad Magazine software" last month!).

Finally, you can also visit the Cafe Express JCF Gift Shop, where you will find a variety of Joseph Campbell quotations on everything from coffee cups to baseball caps, tee-shirts, and journals - as well as our "Mythmaker" series for tee-shirts, hoodies, baseball caps, messenger bags, and more.

We thank you for your consideration.
