Hello all, I think this is a great thread Painted Owl. A few weeks back I read about a study conducted that seems to verify Spencer’s hypothesis. I can’t remember most of the details, but the study was trying to determine how much facts influence opinion. The result (this part I remember) was that i...

Painted Owl, thank you. Yes movement toward objective truth would be the point, with the rule being that, while at times you may believe you have finally arrived, that this is just a phenomena of the “spark”, and continued experience demonstrates that while you may be “closer” to the truth, you stum...

Hello all, This is great. It has been a while since I’ve gotten into a conversation like this. Painted Owl, I think I am agreeing with what you say when you speak of “order recognizing order”, and the witness being part of what is being witnessed. I will try to clarify my model of Truth by first say...

Hello Twokay, I'd have to guess the internet, for reasons that include our ability to have this conversation. Sometimes I think that humans are really the senses of the species, and that some are screaming "watch out!" and some are screaming "look here!". What the internet has done is allow for the ...

Wow. You guys are an interesting and well-read crowd. So many ideas to respond to, and many of them deserve so much thought first that I suspect this topic must tap into something that has deeply captivated all of us for many years. If I don’t respond to something you have said it is not because I f...

Painted Owl,

I agree completely. In my opinion, my opinion is only an opinion. A model of the truth is not the truth, and believing something is true does not make it true. "What we see" is not equal to "what is there".

Porcupine, A prickly question! I haven’t heard of any of these people, so you sent me back to school, and for that, I thank you. I will try to make comments based on the article you noted, and my understanding of the concepts. “Bakhtin's concept of Dialogism creates roots and chains for mutli-voiced...

Porcupine, This is interesting about Todorov. The first part deals with the story as a problem, and this seems to synchronize perfectly to the Hero’s Journey, because the hero is a problem solver, and the journey is an excellent map to the solution process. Act 1 - problem, Act 2 - search for soluti...

Just by way of disclosure, I feel compelled to admit that I am trying very hard to make it as a professional liar. That said, I want to let you in on a little secret, which is that innocents, such as I used to be, little comprehend the true heart of the predatory beast that hides inside of God costu...

Got any? Sorry, I was just getting passionate about something I feel strongly about. I've met some monsters. I've studied them. They enjoy hurting people, it is how they have sex. It is the high that they are addicted to. When you have an addiction like that to feed, unless you are Vlad the Impaller...

Well said, Bohdi. There was a time, while reading the Tao te Ching, that I came across the passage about “He who knows does not say. He who says does not know.” This bothered me a good bit, because, as I may have already demonstrated, I have a certainty tendency to pop off, and it had served as my g...

I haven’t read everything JC wrote or said about following your bliss, but I have been playing a game, sort of, since I was fourteen that seems to resonate with what he intends, and I wonder if anybody else “plays” this game in a similar way for a similar reason, or disagrees that this is what Campb...

Cliff, I like the sound of the term “follow your Bliss” as well. I think I’d like to place this in the context of the Hero’s Journey and equate the Juice (or Bliss) with Apotheosis, and the perceived truth as The Ultimate Boon. Apotheosis is an emotional rush triggered by “Atonement with the Father”...

Cliff, Great response. I chose the name Brujo because it is the nickname of Christopher Sly in my novel, as a consequence of something that happened to him at “Roca Bruja”, or “Witch’s Rock”, a famous surf spot in Costa Rica. It has to do with something I am working toward with my fiction, the formi...

I just finished writing a novel that was my master’s thesis in creative writing, and I attempted to bridge the algorithm of metamorphosis in the HJ to the algorithm of metamorphosis (according to me) taught by Chinese Taoism. What I was reaching for was a model of ‘character movement’ that could be ...
