I am definitely leaning towards that same view. I think is given further credence in that in the east there is more of a tendency towards cooperative work with the unconscious through meditation, etc., and in the west we tend to do battle and be at odds with our unconscious. This is seen in how the ...

[ Why can't it be both? [/b][/i] Of course you are correct. I fell into a trap I thought I left far behind, along with my religious dogma, many years ago. I became singlemindedly focused on one person's view, in this case, Herr Jung, of what an archetype was and began attempting to interpret the me...

I have been contemplating the Dragon as archetypes of the unconscious and I found myself beginning to wonder if the dragon should be seen AS the unconscious or rather as a guardian/captor of the unconscious. I wrestled with this for some time, and finally began to wonder if this wasn't where the rea...

Andromeda, I understand where you are coming from, and agree with you in principle. But I would add this caveat, that we limit ourselves to restricting the limitation of OPPORTUNITY, not the mandatory redistribution of the fruits of another's efforts. IOW, I am wholeheartedly in agreement that anyon...

Nandu, Thank you for the clarification. I wasn't trying to suggest that snake worship was introduced by this myth, my apologies for being unclear. I was simply attempting to trace the path of this particular dragon myth, from one of co-existence, to one of conquering/destruction, and seeing the Kris...

The Krishna/Heracles discussion is very interesting. And, I wonder, if we don't see a transformation of the myth, from east to west through India. Let me explain. The Krishna model: 1. Evil Serpent causing death and destruction 2. Hero emerges to do battle 3. Serpent wounded and about to be killed b...

Martin, I must say that I appreciate your patience, with me, at least. I admit I am still a bit confused regarding where the proposed money is going to come from for the basic income. I assume that someone is going to have to be working, paying taxes, and thus, not following their bliss, but then I ...

Nandu, Thank you very much for adding to the discussion. Passing through a dragon's maw, into a sacred space, especially the Indian temples which, if I am remembering correctly, are rich with imagery, seems to me to be in line with seeing the dragon as an archetype of the unconscious. I believe that...

Andromeda, I very much appreciate your reply. You prompted me to realize that perhaps I was attempting to force a Jungian archetype onto the dragon myth, when perhaps it did not warrant such a universal archetype. In allowing myself to consider this possibility, several new avenues of thought opened...

Well, I will take your advice and look at it more. But for academic purposes it cannot be listed as a reference because it is not considered a reliable resource due to the fact that it is open source. Still, I will admit that I have found some great leads from the links portion at the bottom of arti...

Cool. Many thanks for the clarification Neoplato. And for understanding the spirit in which I was asking. Personally, I really prefer these discussions at a round table at the pub over a cold pint of recently brewed gold! It makes communication soooo much easier (and tasty!). But I would also ventur...

Perhaps I am remembering this incorrectly, and if so I am open to correction, but as I remember it, the broader eastern view of dragons was that they were not necessarily jovial beings, but rather keepers of great power, and that power could be expressed in either destructive or constructive manners...

Very nice! Yes, empiricists tend to turn up their noses at metaphysics, but empiricists tend to shy away from philosophy. Philosophy asks too many of the big questions, who are we, why are we here, what does it all mean, while empiricists like to confine themselves to their beakers and test tubes. "...

My apologies if I was different! I am simply offering the philosopher's point of view and my own experience. I live in Oregon and there are a couple of "Spiritualist" centers near here who delve into what they call "metaphysics," dealing with crystal energies, etc. This is what I was alluding to... ...

If I might be forgiven for jumping in in the fourth quarter here.... I think that one must define what form of metaphysics one is discussing. The word means something very different if talking to a spiritualist than it does if talking to an academic philosopher. To a philosopher metaphysics is a rat...
