Emil still rocks. My grandson, at 5 yrs, knows he doesn't want to go to heaven, and he wants nothing to do with the "angels". His great grandma was very sick, and his Mom told him that Nana might go to be with the angels. He said he didn't want her to go there. His Mom said, "Well, where do you want...

Midrash, Bishop Spong and Mythology (and World Peace)

I haven't read alot of theology, but was given the book "Ressurection, Reality or Myth" (John Shelby Spong) by my brother to pass the time at my Mom's dr. appt. I couldn't return it to him until I finished. I was hooked when Spong mentioned Joseph Campbell in the first chapter, or maybe it was the i...

Back after a long siesta. I can't add anything to the dualistic/monistic thing, because my brain is too lazy to think so hard. But this is my first thread since returning to JCF and it is amazing to read the thoughts of the forum folk again. The original post, about our denial of death, resonates wi...

My husband and I saw the movie a couple of weeks ago, and like Clemsy, enjoyed it somewhat, yet much less than the 1st and 3rd. (The second was an embarrasment, I think of it as Indy sowing wild oats and making mush). When younger, much younger, we watched the movies as pure entertainment, a thrill ...

By the way, Mythinker asked if there was any film that would not in some sense be mythically inspired. Somebody tell me the mythic implications of Ace Ventura, Pet Detective. I'm open to all imaginative offers. Lots of film is just plain entertainment, isn't it?

There is something very bliss-like about getting lost in a really good movie, and in a theatre the experience is enhanced. Lord of the Rings-Fellowship and The Two Towers had me totally entranced. I was let down, almost depressed, to return to the outside parking lot with no Middle Earth in sight. O...

Whoa, I would need a cyborg implant to comprehend that article, Windhorse. I'm glad you guys and gals are up to the challenge, though. Someone has to think about these things. Susie, I am very uncomfortable with the Artificial Intelligence concept. When does a computer stop being a computer and star...

This book opened many new trails of thought as well as bringing some feelings of disquiet. I was brought up southern, baptist and with an almost Catholic guilt about considering anything sensible that challenged the Bible.(Ayn Rand's Atlas Shrugged had a similar effect.) Alot of stuff on this site i...

I couldn't find any posts after Dec. 2002. Is the discussion over? I just joined as an associate and have drunk in these posts like a thirsty desert traveler. Why do some people have these questions about existence and so many seem to have no problem accepting that life is what it is what it is....

Thanks for waking up! This may not be the right place for this train of thought, but has anyone (besides the Windmills of the Gods guy) ever considered that the God of the Bible might be associated at some point in history with an extra-terestrial being or beings? And not just Biblical associations,...

Thanks, JR. I appreciate you taking time to respond. I have lots of Campbell 101 to read and digest before I get a handle on it.

In another topic, JR responded to my post with this "..as metaphor, they (myths) all speak of the same thing, our own projections of temporal existence, universal commonality, transcendence and participating in divinity." None of us will ever "come up with" a 21st Century mythology, will we? Won't i...

Was the banana comment a reference to Darwin? I may be barking up the wrong mythological tree, but as for changing archetypes, isn't the "west" (good old USA and buddies) trying to turn the "east" (oil rich mostly Islamic countries) into a serpent or devil image? Not that terrorists aren't truly a f...

Has anyone seen GI Jane? This was funny (unbelievable) in alot of ways, but still, the mythological elements were striking. Woman as warrior goddess, and earth mother. Kicks butt, Saves man's life, then wipes his brow with motherly care. At the end, man bestows woman with his medal of honor.
