Frazer, among others, is still used as an example of the anthropological approach to the study of myth. He is a classicist and intellectual child of the renaissance. He views myth and religion as products of the psychological make-up of man but in a Darwinian sense. Explicitly in favor of human Rati...

I figured a thread like this would already exist! But do you think we could discuss it in a little more depth than just 12 pages?! <IMG SRC="/forum/images/smiles/icon_wink.gif">

Thanks for the references!

I've been devoting alot of thought to the new BSG. My initial take was similar to some of the sentiments expressed here; lame writing and bad directing. Those problems still plague me on occasion. Despite that I am a fan of the show and am eager to see where the writers take it or it takes them. Som...

This is my first post here and what a wonderful topic! The similarities between the teachings of Jesus and the teachings of the Buddha(s) is, in a very natural way, the same. One post pointed out that the "vanishing ego" concept of Buddhism was expressed by Jesus in the crucifixion. That, I think, i...

I agree with Ritske, 100%. The quote sounds much more like a slight mis-memory. I have no recollection of that quote coming from Campbell in anything I've read or heard.

As a 2nd year student in the Mythological Studies Program at Pacifica Graduate Institute (shameless plug!) I'd like to offer some thoughts on current myth scholars. David Miller, Christine Downing, and William Doty are all considered myth contemporaries and not Campbell progenitors, necessarily. Mil...

Thanks,

Joe Good

I absolutely applaud anyone who has the mental fortitude to read Secret Teachings! I've read portions of that book and in small bits at a time. It was the only way for me to survive it! The content in that book causes my skull to swell so rapidly that a vacuum is created which sucks my eyeballs back...

The obvious reply is the United States. The laundry list of qualities of the Soviet Union are directly recongnizable today in our own country. I took this to be your intent, SteveC. An aspect of the underlying mythology here in the U.S. is that a Real Moral Goodness can exist and, further, is truly ...

In Flight of the Wild Gander Campbell asks, "Is it impossible...to have a science of myth?" (32) My first question is "what do you mean by science?" The dictionary has this to offer... n. 1a. The observation, identification, description, experimental investigation, and theoretical explanation of phe...

Check out "Her Kind" by Jane Cahill. She does a pretty incredible rewrite of a bunch of major female figures from Greek myth, all told in the first person, including Medusa. Her story of Medusa is my favorite.

Imagine Medusa telling her own story, her take on Athena and Perseus...it's great reading.

Is this a private fight or can anybody join in? As I read through this thread several thoughts came up for me. One, if Trademark law had existed when Jesus was roaming the land, which of his phrases would have been trademarked and would that have made a difference for modern christianity? I may have...

Martin, That's from the Rig Veda, not original Campbell! Right! I wasn't suggesting that was Campbell's own thought, only that it serves as an excellent example of the essence of his purpose with almost every word he has written. A few thoughts: The problem is rather that if you don't care, you will...
