Here's a trippy music video by a guy who has evidently been taken possession of by the Green Man: http://au.youtube.com/watch?v=EQiSgWGAc24 Tolkien had the Green Man in mind when he created "Treebeard" (aka Fangorn): http://au.youtube.com/watch?v=CW0QSg5f1Kk Agreed that "nature" is often symbolised ...

My main objection to all this is that the office of the President has become dangerously inflated. It's insane to give, or to ascribe, so much power (perceived or real) to just one person, not to mention just one country. From historian John Lukacs' book "Outgrowing Democracy" (1984), at the end of ...

But even the desideratum of "using one's talents to the best of one's abilities" is morally neutral. The German filmmaker Leni Riefenstahl used her great talents to the best of her abilities, to create the BRILLIANT movie, "Triumph of the Will" in 1934, for Nazi propaganda. Here is the opening scene...

Hey Clemsy, Yes, I too was introduced to the Green Knight when I was a college freshman. Some years later, when I visited Rosslyn Chapel near my ancestral home in Scotland, I learned more about the "Green Man", who is featured in many sculptures at Rosslyn. But first some background about Rosslyn: W...

Not a quote, but here's something for our times. As so many Americans are overly-medicated on myriad psychoactive prescription drugs - um I prefer old-fashioned non -prescription drugs, 8) - well, I'm reminded of this cartoon of "Crazy Pete". His paranoia about "the Zionists" is something that seems...

One of the lesser known rationales for infant baptism in the more traditional Christian sects (let's leave aside the question of whether the Baptists are traditional) is that it symbolises the difference between a newborn human versus all other creatures. In other words, ALL creatures are born, and ...

I don't know about the chickenhawk Bush risking life and limb, but LENIN really DID risk life and limb to "lay down the foundation for real change", and we all know how that worked out. But in Bush's partial defense, he hasn't murdered nor indirectly starved nearly as many innocent civilians as Leni...

To me the question is overly broad. Potential to do exactly what? I don't drink as much vodka as I have the potential to do, and potentially I could become obese if I really made the effort. And I'm not being sarcastic. In a way, Adolf Hitler lived up to his full potential to become a world leader, ...

Clemsy mentioned the loonies we'd rather keep sedated. , meaning the Neo-Nazis who (incompetently) planned to assassinate Obama. Further reports indicate that those guys were zonked out on methamphetamine. That reminded me of this classic piece in The Onion: Meth Addicts Demand Government Address Na...

Don't say "Jehovah", regardless of context

A few thoughts on when certain words might or might not be appropriate to use, depending on context. Monty Python addressed this in the famous "Stoning" sketch in "Life of Brian", where the religious leader tries - and fails - to explain how blasphemy depends on context: http://au.youtube.com/watch?...

Sorry, Ned, but I fond myself disappointed.

Too many popes.
Technically the Vatican would call any putative pope other than Benedict an "Antipope". So I think you mean, "too many antipopes" here.

As Campbell was basically indifferent to Jews except as just one occasionally interesting small ethnic group among thousands, he had very little interest in Kabalah. He was more interested in the big picture than in any particular ethnic group's solipsisms.
