When God was a Woman

I have started reading this very interesting book, When God was a Woman by Merlin Stone. I was led here by numerous references in From Girl to Goddess , the book I mentioned under the "Sacred Feminine" thread. It explores the worship of the Goddess all over the world, before the male God forcibly de...

To share a Christmas memory, along with Clemsy: The Christmas vacation sometimes during the late sixties/ early seventies (Kerala gets two weeks of school vacation). Returning from the famous Krishna temple at Guruvayoor to my ancestral home at Thrissur in a car. Counting the Christmas lights in the...

We no longer toil in fields and weave, wishing tiredly for a glimmer of enlightenment free of the body’s aches and pains. Today we have time to think, to seek a path to higher thought, but we have completely divorced ourselves from the body and from the land, believing that food is sin, sex is sin,...

Quite a few of our environmental problems - maybe the "Environmental Problem" itself - can be traced back to this masculine takeover of the social psyche. As a society, humans have totally divorced the anima: relegated her to the underworld as the Crone and the Witch.

I cannot see for what help to man woman was created, unless it were toward the goal of procreation. And I do not understand why one would exclude this finality. If woman were not given to man for the goal of engendering children, then for what other help? So they could till the earth together? If t...

From the early inception of patriarchal religion, the goddess became sublimated, and her human incarnations morphed into a force of evil and entropy. Across the world, the Judeo-Christian God created the world through words, establishing creation as a solely masculine act, like Izanagi’s giving bir...

Re: your favorite myths and the lessons they impart

Hello all, Very excited to be a part of this amazing community. I wanted to put forward this question, which, as an educator, is near to my heart. What is your favorite myth or folktale (from any culture of course) and what lesson do you think it teaches about life? Let's share the stories that sha...

Sharing what I posted on another blog. I read in the newspaper today, the lament of a father: “I saw my 14-year-old son in uniform this morning. This evening, I saw him in a casket.” Being the father of 13-year-old myself, I broke down reading this sentence. My eyes are streaming now, even as I type...

But make sure that she has read The Hero with a Thousand Faces first. The comparison is where the enjoyment comes from.

From the Introduction: Campbell had called the feminine the “goal” of the quest—the princess needing rescue. While the hero represented the logical, powerful side of the personality, the feminine offered him creativity, nurturing, and intuition: “The mystical marriage with the queen goddess of the w...

Well, the government did a u-turn in a hurry and declared that they have no intention of making Christmas a working day. They say this is a "false news" (which I doubt).

Maybe Santa came to them in their dreams and told them that they will not get any presents if they are naughty. :P

The Hindu Nationalist government of Narendra Modi plans to effectively do away with Christmas holidays for schools in India. I am currently reading "From Girl to Goddess" by Valerie Estelle Frankel. It's a fascinating counterpoint to "The Hero with a Thousand Faces".

I have succeeded in introducing Joseph Campbell to two young people over the past month. One is a girl I met on Goodreads website and incidentally became fast friends with. The other is a boy, one of the cousins of my wife who is studying art in the Netherlands. He read my blog and became interested...
