Re: Buddhism and Hinduism

I restate here, the Campbell quote I started this thread with: This we may term the fundamental posture of the Buddhist mind. The serious commitment of the Occidental mind to the concerns and value of the living person is fundamentally dismissed, as it is in Jainism, and in the Sankhya too. However,...

I have just returned from a visit to beautiful Sri Lanka, where Buddhism and Hinduism overlap seamlessly. From what I have seen so far of Buddhism across the world (Thailand & Sri Lanka), it has to do much more with Hindu philosophy and theology than what the Buddha originally taught. The Buddha for...

Clemsy, The problem here is that people are not willing to accept that engineering also can be a selfless act. As far as the engineer is concerned, the perfection of the finished product is his bliss. He does not bother what it is used for - it is Karma Yoga in its true sense. But since the missile ...

Encourage our young people to... follow their bliss. I do this as an educator. My seniors are watching "The Hero's Adventure" in The POM right now. I agree with you completely, Clemsy. But then, I think where people generally fall short is in their definition of "bliss". For example, you might reme...

Thanks, James. BTW, I posted this on my FB page. As an Indian, I am proud that our scientists could send a rocket to Mars, and that too at a pittance compared to what NASA is spending. As an engineer, I rejoice with the ISRO personnel who were jumping for joy when Mangalyan entered Mars atmosphere -...

Ron,

Experience is subjective and cannot be accepted as scientific evidence, unless confirmed by measurable and repeatable observations.

I have no problem with a subjectively perceived "intrinsic self". But I see no evidence of its objective existence.

Ron, I have read a lot about "near-death" experiences. Recently, there is some claim that German scientists have "proved" that life exists after death, based on NDE. However, I am highly sceptical. "Near Death" is not death. These people returned to life, eventually, and recounted their dreams while...

James, What I wrote on the blog was only partial. Hopefully I will continue on the same theme later. Kerala is a country where people live very close to nature. So our myths, legends and fairy tales are full of earth and wood spirits. Our festivals are also very much linked to earth and vegetation. ...

As far as I know, my "self" is linked to brain activity. The brain stops, and the self disappears. Does it vanish completely? Or does it go to some astral plane? These are all speculations. The only thing I know is that the self cannot be seen to exist outside of the brain. So unless somebody provid...
