Hi twokay,

Great question!

I'm not sure, however, what you mean by "sustainable". That suggests ecology and "green issues", which have only really been around for the last 40 years or so. You talk of the last 300 years.

For me it must be the Industrial Revolution and subsequent three technological revolutions. China is the latest - see HERE

For us in the West we must now embrace the challenge of the Post Industrial Society. This article is from a UK perspective, but it applies to every Western country.

So the answer is the Industrial Revolution. It's when the world took off.

Of course, knowing how gentle and subtle your mind is, I accept that it's not really the correct answer, but hey! I enjoyed thinking about it!

Well Thankyou Ivor
and you are correct that you are not correct
but it is somewhat related so I applaud you
on your effort.
Yes it is an interesting and pertinent question...
I even googled some of it and could only find
anecdotal connections but
good effort

First guess: Eli Whitney's cotton gin. Patented March 14, 1794.

Patenting ... what a concept...
Is "it" patented....???
I don't think so but it is patent.
Good angle...
It is legal though and I suppose
is now in the public domain
and belongs to all of humanity.
Why I'm I giving it a way like
this....
and no Jackson it is not a "rubber ducky."

Hmmm geez pay day must be a long way
off for folks
Thats an interesting and intelligent
choice. Global Postal Service?
Some perhaps to investigate.
Who though was "responsible" for that concept
as it is quite a "valid" contribution that most people ignore or take for granted, but
there must be some sort of international body or agreement on that one.
Very good but not correct but it would make a good substitute answer.
