I wrote a blog post yesterday about this topic and would be interested to hear any thoughts on it or how it might be improved. However I also don’t know the policies here about linking to other sites. Could someone advise?

If you click on Guidelines & FAQ at the top of the page, you’ll find forum posting guidelines the first entry – always a good idea to check those out. Number 8 is the one that addresses your question (in general the answer is no, but there is an exception):
8. Refrain from Self-Promotion
Announcements linking to your new blog post, book, workshop, video clip, etc., will be deleted, unless they are demonstrably part of the greater conversation. The only exception is the Share-Your-Work Gallery, a subforum within The Conversation with a Thousand Faces. If you have art, poetry, writing, or links to music and other work you would like to share, do so here.Stephen Gerringer

Noted Stephen, I’ll refrain from posting such things here.

I’d actually suggest either posting a link (or the entire blog post) in the Share Your Work Gallery (link is in my previous comment), or, if it’s not too much work and is relevant to the discussion, copy-and-paste portions of your blog entry here, customizing it a touch.
The main idea behind that guideline is to encourage discussion, not “canned” material prepared for another venue (you would be surprised how many people would pop on and drop a quick hit-and-run post pointing people to their page, without actually every participating in the conversations here). However, you are already participating, rather than trying to build followers.
I will note that it’s not self-promotion if I share your website, which is http://MyMythos.org

Haha yes well played 🙂 and thank you! You must have googled me then?
After looking at the post again I think it would come across as a big advertisement here because the “answer” I’m proposing to the meaning crisis is not just Personal Mythology but MyMythos’s version of it.
I think I’ll have to find another post that is more relevant for these forums.

Sidian; if I may call you that; would you consider a collaboration from all of us from scratch?; say something like: “What is your interpretation of a Personal Myth and how does it give you meaning looking ahead?”; or something like that. I’m still not quite sure what you are trying to address. The thing is; at least to me anyway; is there is a need to talk about this kind of thing. I think a lot of people are going through this dilemma right now because there are so many different issues folks have to deal with; and Joseph’s work addresses this very point. Anyway; whatever you want to do is fine; it’s just a suggestion.

You mean a separate post where we all discuss what Personal Mythology means to us? Yes I think that would be great and I agree it is something needed among these times of the ‘meaning crisis’.

I see that Stephen has responded to your question and as you decide what you want to do I will leave a link to the JCF YouTube channel which has a huge cache of clips with Joseph addressing a large number topics throughout his work. This is a clip on Jung and the Left-Hand Path of the Hero which specifically addresses Personal Myth. The link to the channel is included within the clip logo below the screen.

Sidian; you have seen the JCF YouTube channel‘s huge stash of clips; right? Dozens and dozens of separate clips to draw from. Just curious

Surprisingly no! Thank you for the link!

You are certainly welcome concerning the link. The long post has been removed and I’ll post something else later. Stephen and I discussed this and there were some unforeseen issues that prevented posting it. No worries as I already have something else in mind that work better anyway. I’ve mentioned your new update to the others so some feedback on how you want to proceed will help to get us started. Again; thanks for the update; this helps a lot.

Also I did some searching last night about Personal Mythology on the internet and came across this wonderful Wikipedia listing that goes quite indepth on this topic and mentions both your mentor; Dr. Krippner; and also Sam Keen who together with Joseph gave workshops at Esalen Institute for many years until just before he passed. Keen’s book; “Your Mythic Journey” was inspired by these workshops; which the Foundation still continues on Joseph’s birthday every Spring. (You may have contributed to this listing and if so it’s extremely well done.) Also it was nice to see Joseph’s biographer; Stephen Larson; “Fire in the Mind”; mentioned along with his terrific book: “The Mythic Image” listed as well.

Well here’s most the text of the post but then afterward it goes into how I believe MyMythos (my personal mythology project) is one of the potential solutions, so I’m leaving that out so as not to self promote.
We are gluttonously consuming information, facts, and data, but we are starved of a working world view, spiritual meaning, life purpose. John Vervaeke calls this “the meaning crisis” and many are inclined to agree with him, as am I.
Cultural traditions have long been a provider of such things, but probably the biggest provider has been religion. For instance: the reasons why you work, why you marry, why you don’t do bad things, or even why you ‘practice’ the sexuality that you do!
But traditions have gone and religion is in decline every single year. So then what?
We have the “rise of the nones”, those who have no religious affiliation. But the curious thing about this rise is not that they are atheist; no, they are rather more often “spiritual but not religious”. So what spirituality is it? Where do its laws and practices come from? Everywhere. They utilize Christian prayer, Babylonian astrology, Yogic stretches, Shamanic sage smudging, Celtic hand fasting, science based theory (entanglement supporting “oneness”) Hindu greetings (Namaste), the list is infinite.
So here we are in the middle of an entire shift on what it means to practice spirituality. The freedom is limitless and yet it also leaves us somewhat disconnected. She celebrate Ostara, but he celebrates Easter; he doesn’t eat meat but she does; he marries because it was prearranged and she did out of love. At the end of the day there are few overlapping traditions, meanings, and values to commune, celebrate, or calibrate with one another.
The paradigm has been shifting for a few decades now, that personal meaning will be the way forward. The question among all this individuation is “Where/when do we reconnect?”.
I believe the answers are slowly being created and built. We will find a new level at which to connect and a new understanding of how to connect with others BASED on the celebration of our uniqueness. This will happen culturally but it will also happen in technology, and become increasingly easier for it.

Sidian; this is terrific. Now I have a much clearer idea of where you are going with this. Btw; did you see a very long post of mine earlier? Right now it’s being held for moderation; but the site has been behaving strangely today. We’ve had “WordPress” security softeware problems in the past that seem to have resurfaced. First as you probably know there were sign-in issues; plus internet connection problems for some of us. Now it seems an old entry problem has resurfaced with the security sometimes asking for checking off pictures to gain access. It’s a familiar security ID protection a lot of websites use since hacking is such a major concern. At any rate a moderator or technical support person usually has to adjust something to get everything running smoothly again . My “very” long post may have triggered something because of the large amount of text and adding a link; (who knows). at any rate I think your material is super; and if you want to go further and expand on this I’m sure everyone else will too.
Did my request about approaching this from multiple viewpoints make sense? And if so is that something that you would be interested in pursuing for an approach for your subject? That way everyone can give their point of view on the subject without feeling like they would be offending anyone; (if that makes sense). This is just a suggestion that might enlarge the approach; but you may have other thoughts in mind about this; so no problem there if that’s the case. This is your thread; so no worries.
Thanks again for responding back with all this rich material; this clears things up a lot because I was a little unclear about what you were asking; and people have so many “different ideas” about what a “personal” myth actually is as I’m sure you’ve experienced.

Well I’d say you’re in luck if you need any help with the backend. MyMythos.org is entirely on WordPress and I’ve been working in WordPress for 15 years. I’ve actually been wanting to find a way to contribute to this site so please let me know when I can assist.
I did not see the long post unfortunately. So sorry to hear it was caught in the gears.
I think your suggestion for everyone chiming in on what PM means to them would be great and really deserves its own post. I’ll get right on it.

Thank you for your willingness to help, Sidian, but JCF is in good shape. We have an excellent team in place, and have a technological company working on a site upgrade at the moment (there was a temporary hiccup yesterday as they made changes to the sign-in process for mobile devices, but that situation was easily resolved). James isn’t involved with the website; he means well, but is making a bit of leap connecting that to an issue eight months ago related to spambots attempting to post porn links in the forums – which is what inspired the use of CAPTCHA.
Similarly, the post that was removed today had nothing to do with technological issues.
I do appreciate your sensitivity to our concerns re self-promotion, so thank you for not going there – not that we have anything against your website (didn’t have to google you – anyone visiting your profile should be able to see your website link).
The topic of personal mythology is endlessly fascinating, and I can’t imagine it being exhausted anytime soon – and, of course, it’s more than just an intellectual exercise, which is why I appreciate Stanley Krippner’s approach (no surprise his and David Feinstein’s The Mythic Path graces my bookshelves, along with a variety of other works on related subjects by a diverse range of practitioners from Jean Houston to, of course, good old Carl Gustav Jung).
Also dear to my heart is Krippner’s “Pilot Study in Dream Telepathy with the Grateful Dead” – now that was an epic experiment!
So how did you happen to meet Stanley? What’s your backstory?

I see. Well I must admit I’m a little disappointed. I hope someday to cross paths more directly with JCF considering my life’s work revolves around something Mr. Campbell practically created. Maybe in the future. Glad to hear things are getting attention on the backend though.
Stanley and I go back about 15 years. He’s an old family friend. My mom got him to visit our home in Boise at the time. I was about 24ish and had been devouring any book I could get about spirituality, religion, quantum physics, self help, and psychology, so we hit it off immediately. He said I ought to meet the kind of people he works with. I began visiting with Stanley, doing any menial tasks to help out, categorizing papers and such, but also socializing with his vast circle of incredibly intelligent people. Eventually he had me giving talks with him at universities, festivals and such. He kept teaching me everything about Personal Mythology along the way as well and it became the biggest life changer for me. I’ve wanted to share that with others ever since.
Stanley’s book is the only one about PM that really codifies it into a system, and even touches on being a way of life. But what I also noted was that newer generations would never pick it up. I thought about this for years until coming to the conclusion that I could revamp it and revitalize it for a new generation who, unfortunately, have much shorter attention spans. Make it more colorful, easier, more fun, and that’s been my life’s goal ever since and how MyMythos came to be. I assume I will continue this work until I die, but it’s hard to predict that far ahead.
Thank you for asking. I have to admit, posting here has been refreshing as it is very difficult to find people on Facebook to participate in the groups I’ve made.

I’m pretty sure your contribution to the field won’t be on the tech end, Sidian. Keep doing what you’re doing and doors will open (to paraphrase Campbell) . . . which sounds like exactly what happened when you met Stanley Krippner.
Pretty much you are “preaching to the converted” here, which is fine. I so appreciate being able to have a discussion without having to preface it with an introductory MYTH 101 tutorial.
There are of course varying degrees of understanding and experience among forum participants, but you are right – it is indeed refreshing to be able to discuss these topics with people of like mind, which helps fortify and inspire us when it comes to slaying dragons “out there,” in the mundane world, where so many are hungry for they know not what – which is where the time and hard work you are putting in is so important.

FAQ: Community
Before you start posting and responding in these forums, please read and follow the following guidelines:
- 1. Respect Others You may certainly take issue with ideas, but please — no flaming / ranting, and no personal or ad hominem attacks. Should the opinion of another forum member spark your anger, please take a deep breath, and/or a break, before posting. Posts must be on topic – related to mythic themes.
- 2. Respect Others’ Opinions These are conversations, not conversions. “Conversation” comes from the Latin words con (“with”) and verso (“opposite”). We expect diverse opinions to be expressed in these forums, and welcome them – but just because you disagree with what someone has to say doesn’t mean they don’t get to say it.
- 3. Come Clear of Mind In addition to expanding the mind, certain substances (alcohol, cocaine, marijuana, LSD, etc.) have been known to impair good judgment. We recommend you keep a journal while under the influence and then later make more rational determinations regarding what is appropriate to share in this forum.
- 4. Respect This Space The Joseph Campbell Foundation, a US not-for-profit organization, offers this forum as part of our mission of continuing Mr. Campbell’s work of increasing the level of public awareness and public discourse with regards to comparative mythology.
- 5. Avoid Contemporary Politics Given the volatile nature of contemporary political discourse, we ask that members steer clear of candidates or current political controversies. Forum members come from across the political spectrum. There are other fora across the internet for discussing myth and politics.
- 6. Be Polite Forum members come from many different sets of cultural assumptions, and many different parts of the world. Please refrain from language whose only purpose is offense. If it helps, imagine your grandmother reading forum posts – as perhaps she may, since other folks’ grandmothers are.
- 7. Refrain from Sexually Explicit Posts Please do not make sexually explicit posts within these forums, unless they are absolutely germane to the discussion underway – and even in that case, please try to warn readers at the top of your post. Not all members have the same threshold when it comes to taking offense to language and pictures. NOTE: Under no circumstances will we condone the posting of links to sites that include child pornography, even inadvertently. We will request that such links be removed immediately, and will remove them ourselves if compliance is not forthcoming. Any Associate knowingly posting such links will be suspended immediately; we will forward a snapshot of the offending page, the web address and the associate’s contact information to the appropriate criminal authorities
- 8. Refrain from Self-Promotion Announcements linking to your new blog post, book, workshop, video clip, etc., will be deleted, unless they are demonstrably part of the greater conversation. If you have art, poetry, writing, or links to music and other work you would like to share, do so here.
- 9. Search First If you’re thinking of starting a new topic, asking a question, etc., please take advantage of the search functionality of this forum! You can find the search field above the list of forums on the main page of the forums. Also, consider searching on the greater JCF website – this site is full of amazing resources on a wide variety of topics, all just a search away.
- 10. Report Violations If you witness or experience behavior that you feel is contrary to the letter or spirit of these guidelines, please report it rather than attacking other members. Do this by choosing the Report button (next to “Reply”) at the top of the post, and select a reason from the dropdown menu (Spam, Advertising, Harassment, or Inappropriate Content). The moderation team will be notified. Depending on the degree of bad behavior, further posts might require approval, or the user could be blocked from posting and even banned.
- 11. Private Messages Forum guidelines apply to all onsite private communications between members. Moderators do not have access to private exchanges, so if you receive messages from another member with inappropriate or hostile content, send a private message (with screenshots) to Stephen Gerringer and/or Michael Lambert.

The Conversations of a Higher Order (COHO) consists of ten public forums loosely focused on a central theme. The forums are listed, with a brief description, on the COHO home page (each forum listed on that page also appears in the same order in the menu in the lefthand column – that menu stays with you as you move about the forums). This also shows who created the last post in each forum, and when.
When you visit a specific forum you will see the list of topics people have posted so far in that forum. Click on one to read that post and any replies. Feel free to add a reply if you have something to share, or just enjoy following the conversation. You can return to the COHO home page by clicking the "Home>Forums" breadcrumb at the top of the page – or move directly to a different forum by clicking on one of the listings from the forum menu in the lefthand column of the page.
If there’s anything you want to introduce – a question, an observation, or anything related to Campbell, myth, or one of his many related interests – create a topic in the forum you feel comes closest to including the subject you want to discuss. Most forums include in their description a link to a corresponding part of the website. For example, The Work of Joseph Campbell description has a link to all his published works: you can of course focus on a specific book or lecture, but also any topic related to the ideas arising out of his work is welcome in that forum.
When posting a new topic or a reply to an existing conversation, check the “Notify me of follow-up replies via email” box (conversations unfold at a leisurely pace: someone might need a few days to let what you write simmer in the back of their brain – this is how you find out someone has replied), and then click Submit. You can also click "Favorite" (top of the page on the right when reading forum threads) to be notified of all responses in a discussion.
Click on the Profile link under your user name in the upper left corner above the forum menu. Then select Edit and follow the prompts to upload an image file from your computer.
When you finish your post, before clicking the Submit button check the box at the bottom of your post that reads, “Notify me of follow-up replies via email.” You can also click on “Subscribe” (in the upper right corner of a thread) to follow the complete conversation (often a comment on someone else’s post might inspire a response from you).
We ask that when linking to web pages, please avoid posting the raw URL address in your text. Highlight the relevant text you'd like to link in your post, then select the link icon in your formatting bar above your post (immediately to the left of the picture icon, this looks like a diagonal paperclip). This opens a small field:
Paste the URL of the page you are linking to into the field provided. Then click on the gear icon to the right of that field, and check the box that says “Open link in a new tab” (so readers can see your link without having to navigate back to the forums), before clicking the green “Add Link” button.
To add an image to your post, click on the image icon in the menu at the top of your post (it's the icon on the far right):
In the Source field of the pop-up form, click on the camera icon on the far right. This should give you access to the files on your PC / laptop, or the photo library on your mobile device. Select the image, and add a brief description (e.g., "Minoan Goddess") in the appropriate field.
In the dimensions field, you only need enter the first number (240 is a good size for starters; if too small click the edit icon and increase that number). Then select OK.
Click on the name of the person you want to contact (under their avatar in a any of their posts). This link will take you to that member’s profile page. Then click on “Send a Message,” and compose.
If you witness or experience behavior that you feel is contrary to the letter or spirit of these guidelines, please report it rather than attacking other members. Do this by choosing the Report button (next to “Reply”) at the top of the post, and select a reason from the dropdown menu (Spam, Advertising, Harassment, or Inappropriate Content).
