Campbell, Jung and Unlocking Creative Potential @ Jane Bancroft Cook Library at New College
Mar 4 @ 6:00 pm – 7:30 pm
“We would do well…to think of the creative process as a living thing implanted in the human psyche.”—Carl Jung
Sarasota artists and C. G. Jung Society of Sarasota board members Joyce Zimmerman and Carol Shore will address how the works of Joseph Campbell and Carl Jung helped to unlock and guide their personal creative processes and life’s work—with the objective of inspiring others to explore the realms of myth, symbolism, dreams and the unconscious as a path toward Self-expression and expanded consciousness.
“You can’t have creativity unless you leave behind the bounded, the fixed, all the rules.”—Joseph Campbell
This interactive discussion will focus on planting the seeds of routine and discipline in our lives that—when nourished—grow into the powerful rituals that allow us to access the “yonder shores” of the unseen realms and then bring our own personal mythology to life in this world.
“The creative process…consists in the unconscious activation of an archetypal image, and in elaborating and shaping this image into the finished work. By giving it shape, the artist translates it into the language of the present, and so makes it possible for us to find our way back to the deepest springs of life.”—Carl Jung
Carol Shore, MA, CET is an Intermodal Expressive Arts facilitator specializing in art for wellness and transitions. As Artist-in-Residence for Moffitt Cancer Center’s Arts In Medicine program for 20 years, Carol worked with patients, visitors and staff. She is currently documenting her creative practice at midlife—a collection of drawings, paintings and sculptures with commentary on archetypal images as agents of change, a “Midlife Crisis Illustrated” amplified from a Jungian perspective. Her paintings are in private collections worldwide.
Joyce Zimmerman is a mixed media artist with strong ties to expressive dance movement. Her authentic art process continued to evolve after studying in the late 70s with an esteemed Jungian therapist. Joyce’s works center around dreams and mark making with her non-dominate hand to access the dormant aspects of her creative spirit. She also creates icons to fulfill her desire to capture ancient objects. While living in Massachusetts, Joyce won a grant through the state and the Monroe Center for the Arts to create a series of workshops based on the teachings of Carl Jung and life experiences. The De Cordva Museum school in Lincoln, MA, later invited her to conduct the journal workshop “Nurturing Self Through Creativity. She recently published her book of poetry, prose and art: The Poets Eye.

Beyond the Five Senses: Transcending Physical Existence @ Jane Bancroft Cook Library at New College
Apr 15 @ 6:00 pm – 7:30 pm
“The psychotic drowns in the same waters in which the mystic swims with delight.”
― Joseph Campbell
As the fields of science, psychology and neuroscience continue to explore the inner workings of the human mind and consciousness, we continue to debate what constitutes “reality” as well as what separates psychotic episodes from mystic, spiritual experiences and journeys to other “unseen” realms that are as “real” as our own waking world.
Learn how we can utilize the teachings of Joseph Campbell and Carl Jung to help us understand the mythical and the non-physical realms of experience that can be induced by psychedelics, meditation, mental illness and psychic phenomenon—to bring back profound understandings that can help expand our worldview and transcend our limiting beliefs in this physical world. The new renaissance in psychedelic drugs will be discussed using examples from Michael Pollan’s book How to Change Your Mind.
