Stephen Gerringer

Community Coordinator

Stephen Gerringer has been a Working Associate at the Joseph Campbell Foundation (JCF) since 2004. His post-college career trajectory interrupted when a major health crisis and subsequent brush with death prompted a deep inward turn, Stephen “dropped out” and spent most of the next decade on the road, thumbing his way across the country on his own hero quest. Stephen did eventually “drop back in,” accepting a position teaching English and Literature in junior high school. In the wake of the tragic events of 9/11, inspired by Campbell’s advice to “follow your bliss,” he left the classroom to pursue his interest in creativity and the mythic imagination. Stephen’s responsibilities with JCF have included serving as the author of JCF’s Practical Campbell essay series, facilitating collaborations with other institutions, speaking on mythic themes to JCF Mythological RoundTable® groups, outside organizations, and college and high school audiences, and moderating thousands of conversations on Campbell and myth across a variety of online discussion platforms. He is the author of Myth and Modern Living, and editor of Joseph Campbell’s Myth and Meaning. Stephen Gerringer and his wife Destiny live in Modesto, California.
