During Initiation, or the second stage of the hero's journey, adventurers make their way through what Joseph Campbell calls "the road of trials." The challenges along this road test adventurers and push them to learn new skills and ideas, to experience new feelings and sensations, to meet new people, to forge new solutions. In other words, the adventurer must change. That's what Initiation is all about. Setting out on the road of trials isn't easy. The adventure requires courage, humility, hope, and daring but then, at the end of the trials, adventurers can find the ultimate boon or divine gift, inwardly and outwardly.
