Heroic journeys begin with a departure or separation, whether literal or metaphorical. Day separates from night, travelers separate from their homes, astronauts separate from the earth. No matter what form the separation takes, however, similar motifs repeat: the call to adventure, the refusal of the call, supernatural aid, the crossing of the first threshold, and the belly of the whale. Each of these stages offers its own lessons and wisdom.
